DensityX is an innovative inspection and quality-control system specifically developed for the Powder Metallurgy (PM) industry. The technology addresses a longstanding challenge in PM manufacturing: the rapid, accurate, and non-destructive measurement of density distribution within green and sintered components. Unlike conventional density measurement methods, which typically provide only a single average value, DensityX generates a detailed two-dimensional density map, enabling manufacturers to visualize density gradients across the entire part and identify potential quality issues before they impact final product performance.
The system combines two advanced measurement technologies: laser profilometry and digital X-ray radiography. During operation, a PM component is automatically transported through the equipment on a moving tray. Two laser profilers first measure the component’s thickness distribution, after which an X-ray radiography scan captures local attenuation values across the part. By combining thickness and attenuation data through a proprietary algorithm, DensityX calculates a high-resolution two-dimensional density map. The result is a color-coded visualization that clearly highlights density variations, non-uniform compaction zones, and potential defects.
A key advantage of DensityX is its simplicity and speed. Calibration requires only a reference sample of the same type whose average density has been measured using the conventional Archimedes method. Once calibrated, the system can measure a complete density map of a component in approximately one minute while achieving an accuracy better than 1%. The entire process is automated, including analysis and pass/fail classification, making it highly suitable for industrial production environments. Additionally, the radiation emitted by the equipment is extremely low and comparable to natural background radiation levels, ensuring safe operation for personnel and surrounding environments.
The innovation fills an important gap in Powder Metallurgy quality assurance. Traditional density measurement methods generally provide only bulk density values and offer no information about local density variations. Determining local density typically requires destructive testing, such as cutting the component into multiple sections and measuring each fragment individually, a process that is time-consuming, costly, and often impractical. DensityX eliminates these limitations by providing a complete non-destructive density map in a single scan. This capability enables manufacturers to understand compaction quality, detect defects early, and optimize production processes more efficiently than ever before.
From a manufacturing perspective, the technology offers significant operational benefits. Density gradients in green components are often a root cause of dimensional instability, distortion, or mechanical property variations after sintering. DensityX allows these issues to be identified before downstream processing, reducing scrap rates and preventing unnecessary consumption of materials, energy, and production resources. The technology is also highly valuable during product development, enabling rapid validation of tooling modifications and compaction process parameters through immediate visual feedback of density distribution.
The economic value of the innovation is derived from improved process control, reduced waste, and enhanced manufacturing efficiency. By detecting quality problems at an early stage, manufacturers can avoid costly sintering of non-conforming parts and significantly reduce rework and inspection costs. The technology also supports faster optimization of pressing tools and production settings, accelerating new product development and reducing time-to-market.
From a sustainability standpoint, DensityX contributes directly to resource efficiency and waste reduction. Early identification of defective green parts minimizes unnecessary processing, lowers energy consumption, and reduces material losses. The technology also supports the digitalization of manufacturing quality control, enabling better traceability, improved production planning, and reduced process variability.
DensityX has currently reached Technology Readiness Level 8 (TRL 8) and has been successfully demonstrated through operational prototypes installed and tested at Powder Metallurgy manufacturers. Developed by ACCENT PRO 2000 S.R.L., with patent protection in preparation, the system represents a breakthrough in PM inspection technology.
Overall, DensityX is the first industrial solution capable of delivering fast, accurate, non-destructive, full-field density mapping of Powder Metallurgy components, providing manufacturers with a powerful tool to improve quality, reduce waste, optimize production, and accelerate innovation.
